Disease X: Seek & Destroy

The Covid-19 pandemic was a stark reminder: humanity remains vulnerable to viral threats. Scientists warn that the next global catastrophe could be sparked by a still-unknown pathogen, a so-called Disease X, potentially far more deadly than the coronavirus. Millions of unknown pathogens lie hidden in the depths of the ocean, in permafrost, and in animal hosts – each one potentially dangerous. Russian research centres, including the VECTOR Institute and the Somov Research Institute, are leading large-scale efforts to stay ahead of the next threat.

From collecting samples in remote taiga forests to decoding viral genomes and developing tests, treatments, and vaccines, scientists are building a system designed to counter future pandemics. As viruses continue to demonstrate an astonishing ability to mutate, this work is becoming critically important for all of humanity.
